BDS first published an analysis of the packed products market in the UK in 2006. This was at a time when there was limited available marketing information on the packed aggregates and prepared cementitious products industry.

There remains today very little in the way of publicly available information. In response to this BDS has published a major update on the sector providing a clear picture of its current status. This was published in January 2016.

The latest report provides analysis of:

Market size                               Producers and shares
Regional breakdown                 Products
Branding                                   Pricing
Pack sizes                                Routes to market
End users                                 Supply and service factors

The market has been analysed from two perspectives – companies producing packed products and those selling them. Over 80 companies operating around 150 sites producing packed products have been identified, including individual outputs estimates by plant. Details of these individual sites are contained in a separate BDS report, “Estimated outputs of packed products plants”, published at the same time.

Research was carried out with manufacturers and sellers of packed products, including interviews with builders merchants, DIY stores and garden centres.

For the purposes of the survey, packed products were split into three categories:
General aggregates
Prepared cementitious products
Others – including decorative

This survey includes bulk bags as well as the traditional 40kg, 25kg, 20kg and smaller sizes. It excludes the packed cement market.

The report is an essential aid in developing strategy and identifying merger and acquisition opportunities. It should be read by all aggregate and cement producing companies and suppliers to the packed products industry.
